Exeter Air Cadets Visit RAF Brize Norton.

Cadets and Staff from Exeter’s 13 (City of Exeter) Squadron Air Training Corps recently enjoyed an excellent visit to Royal Air Force Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, the largest base in the RAF.

The massive station, which was granted the freedom of the City of Exeter in 2013, employs 5,800 military & 1,500 civilian staff. It is home the 55 huge aircraft of the RAF’s strategic and Tactical Air Transport and Air-to-Air Refuelling fleets, operating the Lockheed C-130J Hercules, Boeing C-17 Globemaster, Airbus Atlas and Airbus Voyager aircraft.

The Cadets from the Wyvern Barrack based unit, who arrived after an early start from Devon, were first given a look round a massive Airbus Atlas Airlifter from 70 Sqn, which can transport troops, outsized loads such armoured vehicles and helicopters, as well as humanitarian cargo.

They then visited Air Traffic Control and the Ground Radio Maintenance Section who look after the ground radio communications and navigational equipment installed on the Airfield.

After lunch it was off to the Joint Air Delivery Test and Evaluation Unit, the tri-service organization that tests the suitably of all equipment to be carried in, underneath or dropped from UK Forces aircraft.

Finally the Cadets went to 47 Squadron, one of the two remaining RAF Squadrons who operate the legendary C-130 Hercules. Our guide was an ex-Cadet of 13 Squadron ATC, who is a Sergeant Engineer on the unit. She took time to speak to the Cadets about what they could achieve in the RAF as a career.

We would like to thank RAF Brize Norton for a fantastic day (apart from the freezing cold weather) and particularly ex Devon and Somerset Wing Cadet, SAC Tom Drew from the Air Cadet Liaison Officer team for organising the day.
