The 75th Anniversary Torch reaches Hampshire & Isle of Wight

from an article by Flight Lieutenant David-John Morgan, Media Communications Officer, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wing, in August 2016. After months of meticulous planning, the 75th Anniversary Torch was brought to RAF Odiham by cadets from Thames Valley Wing and handed to Cadet Warrant Officer Travers of 413 (Aldershot) Squadron and Cadet Whalvin of 1391 (Romsey) Squadron to begin its 24 hours with cadets and staff. hiow1aodihamchinook hiow21428 The first adventure was an exciting flight in a Chinook around the north of the Wing before making its way to Portsmouth and HMS Excellent where cadets took part in a formal parade to present the Torch to Commodore Briers.  After a well executed parade, the Torch joined cadets on camp at HMS Bristol who escorted it across the Solent to 1024 (Isle of Wight) Squadron who took the Torch to join 1189 (Portsmouth) Squadron where cadets were enjoying field craft and target shooting at a multi-activity camp.   hiow3a1421For its final journey of the day, the Torch returned to HMS Excellent where it was transported by cadets of 1350 (Fareham and District) Squadron to RAFU Swanwick based at the National Air Traffic Service where it enjoyed an informative tour of the joint civil-military radar organisation. Bright and early next morning, the Torch made its way to Romsey where cadets from 1391 (Romsey) Squadron escorted it to the National Motor Museum Beaulieu where cadets and staff were treated to a behind the scenes tour, even meeting Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! hiow4-squadronTo end its time in the wing, the Torch was stylishly transported in Wing Commander Peter Priest's classic car to a quick pit stop with 1308 (New Forest) Squadron completing their National Navigation award training, then with cadets from 2515 (Ringwood and Fordinbridge) Squadron to the Bournemouth Aviation Museum said goodbye to hand over to Wing Commander Vanesa Toth and her cadets from Dorset Wiltshire Wing. Impressively in 24 hours, the torch reached some 200 personnel from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wing. ENDS hiow6a1420 hiow5a1350farehamdistrict
