South West Region

A summer explosion of activity through the South West for the 75th Anniversary Torch

From John O'Groats five weeks earlier, the South West Region's wholehearted engagement with the 75th Anniversary Torch Relay was demonstrated in the last week of August 2016 as staff and cadets took the Torch by land, river, canal, sea and air, carried by bicycles and in canoes, road march training teams (fresh from the 100th edition of the Nijmegen Marches) and in aircraft, visiting DEA expeditions, an aviation museum, rock climbing and abseiling, on zipwires, even touring through the night to show the Torch to every squadron in one wing. Accounts of the Torch's progress through each wing is described in the six reviews that follow this page. ac75torchtv30815aa Thames Valley, from Windsor on Sunday   hiow1benson Hampshire & Isle of Wight, from RAF Odiham on Monday     ac75torchdww1658aaviationmuseumrogers23aug16 Dorset & Wiltshire, from Bournemouth Aviation Museum on Tuesday   ac75torchbgw621vgsocbgw25aug16 Bristol & Gloucestershire, at 621 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, Hullavingdon, Thursday   cliftonbridgefb5bjn20nov16   Devon & Somerset Wing, at Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol, Friday   dq9a5410a   Plymouth & Cornwall Wing, at Okehampton Camp, Dartmoor, Saturday   pc3-torch2cds       Plymouth & Cornwall Wing, finishing Lands End, Sunday       Our thanks go to all staff and cadets members, civilian committees, parents, friends and generous sponsors who contributed to and took part in events in each wing, and to the social media, photography and video enthusiasts who co-operated across the region to attract and later to host a wide external TV, radio and print media interest in our part of Torch anniversary events.
