Cadets from 2120 (Witney) Squadron supported two flag raising ceremonies in the town as across the globe, other communities came together to mark the same event; Commonwealth Day 2016.

At the Head Office for West Oxfordshire District Council, Cadet Warrant Officer Aaron Gibson (18) assisted Cllr Norman MacRae, leader of the council, and Regimental Sergeant Major Ethan Mumford of the Ox & Bucks Army Cadet Force, raise the Commonwealth Flag. At a similar ceremony, Cadet Corporal Emily Harrison assisted Cllr Chris Holliday, Deputy Mayor of Witney, fly the flag over the Town Hall.

Speaking after the ceremony, Cllr Holliday said:

“It was an honour to raise the Commonwealth Flag accompanied by Witney Town Council staff and a privilege to be assisted by Cpl Emily Harrison representing 2120 (Witney) Squadron, Royal Air Force Air Cadets.”

Squadron Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Mike Caffrey praised both Cadets for their participation in the two ceremonies:

“Both Cadets have demonstrated one of the many pillars that make the Royal Air Force Air Cadets one of the best youth organizations to be a member of; that is their sense of unity. Standing together with Commonwealth cousins across the Globe, both Cadets were able to express through a friendship of nations that transcends the generations and cultural barriers. Both enjoyed the short, but significant ceremonies and they are a credit to our organization as we celebrate our 75th anniversary.”

Witney Royal Air Force Air Cadets continue to train and encourage the next generation with a wide range of training and skills that are beneficial to all walks of life. Being an Air Cadet offers the chance to take part in exciting activities including camps at RAF Stations, Sports, Adventure Training,  the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and of course, flying.
