Devon Somerset Air Cadet Band – ‘Best in the South West’

From an article forwarded by Squadron Leader Dave Rolfe, Media Communications Officer, Devon Somerset Wing   Devon Somerset Air Cadet Band are celebrating being officially recognised as the ‘Best in the South West’. The cadets competed in the South West Region Band Competition held at RAF Odiham in Hampshire after many hours of preparation and practice where they were marked on their musical ability, standard of dress and foot drill. The cadets, from squadrons across both counties, are aged from 13 to 20 years and of differing musical abilities. Their band duties are undertaken alongside normal squadron activities which include flying, gliding, shooting, sport and adventure training. Wing Media Officer, Squadron Leader Dave Rolfe said, “The band has been working very hard in practice, performance and drill. We are exceptionally proud of their achievements.” In this year’s competition Devon Somerset Wing took seven out of eight musical disciplines, including full band, smartest band, percussion, fanfare, solo drummer and drum major. First prize for the ensemble was also awarded with a performance by Cadet Sergeant Jenny Symes-Podic from 421 (Totnes) Squadron, Cadet Flight Sergeant Tim Salvidge, 1955 (City of Wells) Squadron and Cadet Sergeant Cavan Plant, 722 (Chivenor) Squadron. Cadet Corporal Tasha Gavin from 211 (Newbury) Squadron won first prize as solo bugler. Devon & Somerset Air Cadet Band is now busy practicing for the Air Cadet national band championships to be held at RAF Halton – competition is sure to be tough. Cadets are not obliged to join the armed forces but many choose to do so. Flying, gliding, sports and adventure training are some of the many activities open to Air Cadets.
