Bannock, 2507 (Bicester) Squadron. Yesterday at camp, myself and the other cadets went to visit the York aerospace museum. There was a multitude of planes including a Dakota and two Nimrods. A small group of cadets including myself had some banter while we were looking at the planes, including taking some pictures. After having our horror bags (lunch), we headed to the York train museum. Looking around the museum was fun but not as good as the aerospace museum, because we’re air cadets for a reason ;) Today, me and the other cadets went to RAF Fylingdales to look at the facility and got to see what goes on there. The most exciting part was visiting the fire section where we got use the cool breathing equipment and crush a car door with the ‘Jaws of life’ that the fire service often use, which was extremely fun. Then we got to use the powerful hose attached to the fire truck, and that was amazing too. RAF Fylingdales is a giant radar used to monitor all the items that are in space around the earth and more importantly, looking out for missiles that have been fired and entering the skies above the UK. The RAF staff went through the history of the station, explained about working alongside USA personnel and did a demonstration on the computers about what happens when they get a warning of a missile been fired. Due to the high security we weren’t allowed to take any photos :-( Read in browser » (http://www.aircadets.tv/blog/405) http://twitter.com/share?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aircadets.tv%2Fblog%2F405&text=Day+3+%E2%80%93+Linton-on-Ouse+Camp&count=none http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=1236caeab8826ac0d7af78759&id=46038d92f3&fblike=fblike-a5b993e8&e=[UNIQID]&socialproxy=http%3A%2F%2Fus7.campaign-archive2.com%2Fsocial-proxy%2Ffacebook-like%3Fu%3D1236caeab8826ac0d7af78759%26id%3D46038d92f3%26url%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.aircadets.tv%252Fblog%252F405%26title%3DDay%25203%2520%25E2%2580%2593%2520Linton-on-Ouse%2520Camp ** Didcot Squadron Win Town’s Youth Community Award ------------------------------------------------------------ By CI Mark Gray on Oct 28, 2013 02:29 pm On Saturday 19 October 2013, Didcot First organised an Oscar-style Business and Community Awards Ceremony, sponsored by local businesses, at the Cornerstone Arts Centre in Didcot. The Awards are designed to recognise the best of business and community organisations in the Town, over the preceding year. 2410 (Didcot) Squadron were announced as winners of the Youth Community Award. The announcement was made by way of a pre-recorded video by Matt Richardson, the Didcot born, young stand-up comedian who is currently hosting ITV2's X-Factor Extra programme. The Award was collected by Squadron Leader Paul Haines, the Squadron Treasurer, and Civilian Instructor Barry Wicks, who nominated the Unit. The majority of the Squadron Staff, doing what they do best, were busy with a weekend Adventure Training Activity! Squadron Leader Haines, whose day time job is Thames Valley Wing's Executive Officer said: "This is tremendous recognition for the Squadron as the Town's premiere Youth organisation. It recognises not only the effort in making our cadets active members of their community but also the tremendous support that cadets and staff of 2410 Squadron have given to a very wide-range of events in the Town over the last year". Each cadet is then required to pass a weapons handling test (WHT) before firing their first 5 rounds on the range the same day. 3 cadets also trained on the L98A2 rifle (a modified version of the L85A2 rifle used by serving British forces) and are looking forwards to the live fire opportunities coming up in November. Exercise Commander Flying Officer James Preston “With 143 cadets trained on the #8 and or L98A2 rifle TASER continues to deliver one of the core cadet experience promises. I look forwards to 2014 with the inclusion of the L81A2 target rifle which can be used up to ranges of 600m”. All Air Cadet rifle training and target shooting takes place in controlled conditions and is supervised by qualified adult staff. ** Gallery ------------------------------------------------------------ ** TASER Weekend ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/TASER-Weekend/DSC08234%20%28Large%29.jpg A group of cadets spent their weekend training to shoot http://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/TASER-Weekend/DSC08236%20%28Large%29.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/TASER-Weekend/DSC08238%20%28Large%29.jpg Read in browser » (http://www.aircadets.tv/news/403) http://twitter.com/share?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aircadets.tv%2Fnews%2F403&text=TASER+Expands+To+143+Cadets+Trained&count=none http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=1236caeab8826ac0d7af78759&id=46038d92f3&fblike=fblike-cca6493c&e=[UNIQID]&socialproxy=http%3A%2F%2Fus7.campaign-archive1.com%2Fsocial-proxy%2Ffacebook-like%3Fu%3D1236caeab8826ac0d7af78759%26id%3D46038d92f3%26url%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.aircadets.tv%252Fnews%252F403%26title%3DTASER%2520Expands%2520To%2520143%2520Cadets%2520Trained ** TASER Expands To 143 Cadets Trained ------------------------------------------------------------ By CI Mark Gray on Oct 28, 2013 10:16 am On Saturday 26^th and Sunday 27^th October 2013 cadets from 155 (Maidenhead), 381 (Reading), 447 (Henley-on-Thames), 966 (Wallingford), 1861 (Wantage), 1996 (Early), 2210 (Cowley) and 2410 (Didcot) squadrons took part in the monthly TASER (Training And Shooting ExpeRience) weekend held at 447 (Henley-on-Thames) squadron. We started off the day with breakfast in the Officers’ mess, and then off to a briefing by the ACLO about this camp. Then it was off to Elvington Air Museum where we got up close and personal with the fascinating aircraft. Afterwards, we were given the usual “horror boxes” for lunch, and travelled to The National Railway Museum, where we spent two hours looking at trains… we even found “platform 9 ¾”!!! Then we came back to RAF Linton-on-Ouse for dinner and relaxing together in “Maple Leaf”. Cdt S. Evans Garcia, 153 (Slough) Sqn After an extra hour in bed I think, we prepared for the jam-packed day ahead of us. Today we paid a visit to the Elvington Air Museum and the National Rail Museum. At the Elvington museum several of us got encounters with aircraft that were nearly 100 years old to modern day ones. Some cadets even got to go onto a simulator! We then had the very nice “horror” boxes and set off in our minibuses to the National Railway Museum. Here, we got to learn the history and the heritage of Great Britain’s Railways and railways and trains from all over the world from countries such as Japan and China. The highlight for me was seeing how both aircraft and trains have evolved over time. Finally we topped the day with dinner at the very posh dinner at the Officers’ mess and chilling out in the Maple Leaf room. Cdt C McAleese 2267 (Brize Norton) Sqn Ok, so day 1 at RAF Linton on Ouse, and my room; slightly haunted by millions of noises, is starting to feel like my own. Although completely and utterly different, I don’t normally have my mum check my room, make me parade around in my uniform and inspect the tiny little details such as my mirror. We started with a pacy march to the ever so formal officers’ mess, for a touch of breakfast. Followed by as much as we could drink seeing as we have been parched, because the water had been deprived, well water that actually tasted nice had!!!!! Our first official activity at RAF Linton on Ouse was a brief with the ACLO Flight Lieutenant Ward. He had a great sense of humour, however, we all seemed to miss the comfort of our beds! Giving him a rather quiet response, the Camp commandant completed with his own brief introducing each staff member and the Wing Warrant Officer naming who was in each flight. I got B flight, B for boss as they say! Once the horror boxes had been picked up we made our way to the Air Museum, an actual airfield that actually used to get used. This being much different than expected. The force of the wind, dragged us from building to building. Showing us the archaic uniforms and not so decorated ATC and Naffi! We were given our horror boxes once we wondered for 2 hours. Surprisingly not as bad as we thought, giving an enjoyable lunch all round. Next stop, the National Train Museum, it was everlasting. Once you thought you’d finished, you were proved wrong. Royal trains and lower class trains, the new Chinese bullet train and the old steam ones. You could watch trains arrive from the balcony, also a chance for some fresh air. We came back after 2 more hours, and enjoyed a meal at the officers’ mess. Now we are chilling at the Maple Leaf. Today was great and showed us much about aircraft and how fortunate we are. Looking forward to tomorrow. :) Read in browser » (http://www.aircadets.tv/blog/402) http://twitter.com/share?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aircadets.tv%2Fblog%2F402&text=Day+2+%E2%80%93+Linton-on-Ouse+Camp&count=none http://us7.campaign-archive2.com/?u=1236caeab8826ac0d7af78759&id=46038d92f3&fblike=fblike-0558c8d6&e=[UNIQID]&socialproxy=http%3A%2F%2Fus7.campaign-archive1.com%2Fsocial-proxy%2Ffacebook-like%3Fu%3D1236caeab8826ac0d7af78759%26id%3D46038d92f3%26url%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.aircadets.tv%252Fblog%252F402%26title%3DDay%25202%2520%25E2%2580%2593%2520Linton-on-Ouse%2520Camp ** Day 1 – Linton Camp ------------------------------------------------------------ By Fg Off Daniel Holden on Oct 26, 2013 08:50 pm So after an early start for some, 26 cadets and 4 staff members arrived at RAF Linton-on-Ouse for a busy week of activities. After a journey along motorways, over country roads, rickerty bridges, a minor bird strike and a pit stop for supplies everyone arrived ready for the week ahead. Once rooms had been allocated and kit unpacked it was a rare occurance as everyone joined together in the Officers Mess for dinner (what a treat). With a brief from the Fire Section once back in the accomodation everyone headed off to get their kit ready for the busy week ahead. With the Wing Warrant Officer on camp there will be no excuses to not be able to see your face in shoes for the camp photo on Monday! Tomorrow is a day off camp with a number of visits arranged but you'll need to check back to see what everyone gets up to and cadets from the camp will be blogging about what they did. Fingers crossed the weather holds off. Having been a member at the squadron for over 5 years CWO Jones was nominated by OC 2507, Flt Lt D Azizian due to the outstanding commitment and achievement he has shown during his time at the squadron. In his citation, Flt Lt Azizian comments that CWO Jones joined 2507 (Bicester) Squadron in May 2008. With a passionate interest in aviation, and a firm desire to join the RAF or commercial airlines, his major achievements have been in the flying arena. He completed a gliding scholarship to solo standard and then gained a flying scholarship under the Air Cadet Pilot Scheme at Tayside Aviation. He was also the first cadet at Bicester to complete a newly established Squadron flying scholarship, sponsored between Oxford Aviation and the Squadron Welfare Committee. Nevertheless, Jones is an exemplary all round cadet who has succeeded in many other ATC spheres; he has completed the Cadet Leadership Course, at Frimley Park, attained his Silver DoE Award, and is a veteran of many Camps. An inspirational young leader, with excellent communications skills, he is an outstanding role-model and mentor to his junior cadets. With Master Air Cadet and Instructor cadet qualifications, he has latterly been fulfilling the adult staff role of Squadron Training Officer. External to the Corps, he is an experienced canoeist who has won at regional and national kayak competitions. Cadet Warrant Officer Jones is a highly presentable cadet of excellent bearing and has carried his Squadron’s Banner on many public occasions. A personable and committed cadet, he will discharge the duties of a Lord Lieutenant Cadet with conscientiousness and style. Each year nominations are sought for the next Lord Lieutenants cadet to support Tim Stevenson OBE as he conducts his duties including: * Formally receiving The Queen, members of the Royal Family or heads of state when they visit Oxfordshire. * Acting on behalf of The Queen in presenting awards and honours * Maintaining links with the armed forces and emergency services * Supporting the civic life of the county, working with local councils and agencies, the emergency services, schools, charities and the voluntary sector. CWO Jones will now be asked to attend events with the Lord Lieutenant and also act as an ambassador to not only his squadron and wing but also the Corps as he meets high level dignitaries and other members of youth organisations. Remember that everything you do as a cadet adds up and perhaps next year you could be nominated. Cadets from 966 (Wallingford), 1861 (Wantage), 2120 (Witney), 2121 (Abingdon), 2267 (Brize Norton) and 2410 (Didcot) had a busy weekend learning a range of skills including striking a camp, field cooking, orienteering, camouflage and concealment and field shelters. This new knowledge was then put to the test with a night exercise to combine all their new skills and team building by working with cadets who they have never met before. On the Sunday the cadets took part in a range of activities provided by the staff at the Scout Centre such as the outdoor climbing wall, Jacobs’s ladder and a number of team building exercises. Even with the wet weather on the Sunday the cadets were all in high spirits and gained a lot from the weekend. The weekend organised by Sector Commander, Sdn Ldr Breward allows new cadets under taking their first class training to learn in a practical environment. In addition to the fieldcraft weekend 6 cadets from the sector also undertook the NNAS Bronze (National Navigation Award Scheme) where they were tested on their navigation skills on an unfamiliar route. The cadets had to demonstrate a good knowledge of basic navigation whilst out walking and also have a good theory of navigation principles. All the cadets that attended passed the award and can now look to complete their Silver award in the future. The weekend was a great success for the cadets and all builds towards their Are you On Target (http://www.aircadets.tv/AreYouOnTarget) cadet experience. ** Gallery ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Cadets Enjoy Fieldcraft Weekend ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1278.jpg Pictures from a weekend at Youlby Sector Camp http://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1245.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1250.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1251.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1252.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1253.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1254.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1257.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1260.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1263.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1264.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjo y-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1268.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1271.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1274.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1275.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1279.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1281.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/100_1282.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/562305_10153346650265024_1413822084_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/960034_10153346639080024_1953979690_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/988307_10153346645105024_816281407_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/v ar/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/999287_10153346641800024_28823533_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1004980_10153346647735024_1472660842_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1069302_10153346650300024_475126498_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1184895_10153346639150024_1481901045_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1374055_10153346641840024_1996923273_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1374722_10153346636325024_238795494_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1375230_10153346633735024_1531501274_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1376982_10153346650145024_1394533844_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/N ews/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1377278_10153346636355024_1663989031_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1383587_10153346647710024_150659205_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1385301_10153346645240024_1055520788_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1390694_10153346641835024_337926122_n.jpghttp://www.aircadets.tv/gallery3/var/albums/News/Cadets-Enjoy-Fieldcraft-Weekend/1392084_10153346647730024_939622455_n.jpg Read in browser » (http://www.aircadets.tv/news/399) http://twitter.com/share?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aircadets.tv%2Fnews%2F399&text=Cadets+Enjoy+Fieldcraft+Weekend&count=none http://us7.campaign-archive2.com/?u=1236caeab8826ac0d7af78759&id=46038d92f3&fblike=fblike-42341fca&e=[UNIQID]&socialproxy=http%3A%2F%2Fus7.campaign-archive1.com%2Fsocial-proxy%2Ffacebook-like%3Fu%3D1236caeab8826ac0d7af78759%26id%3D46038d92f3%26url%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.aircadets.tv%252Fnews%252F399%26title%3DCadets%2520Enjoy%2520Fieldcraft%2520Weekend ** More to read: ------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================ Copyright © 2013 Air Cadets, All rights reserved.
