Cyprus Camp gets the thumbs up from cadets

Four Cadets and a member of staff from Hants & IoW Wing spent 10 days at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus in April this year. They were Sgt Zac Hancox and Sgt Jon Rowe from 1927 Petersfield Squadron and Cpl Nicola Guy and Cdt Sam Frost from 2515 Ringwood and Fordingbridge Squadron, accompanied by Flt Lt M Clark from 413 Aldershot Squadron.

They joined cadets from across the UK to enjoy the sunny Easter weather in Cyprus along with a multitude of activities such as a tour of the United Nations buffer zone between the Greek south and Turkish northern parts of the Island, a tour around the International Airport at Nicosia which has been disused since the 1972 conflict on the Island, flying in a Cessna 172 with the RAF Akrotiri Flying Club, a day boat tour of the coast with Greek food buffet, live band and swimming from the boat deck, shooting on the sat range at Episkopi army base, a tour around a VC10, demonstration explosions courtesy of the EOD team, Go Karting, team building exercises with the Force Development Team and a day at the brand new Water World theme park at Ayai Napa. There was even the occasional down time to enjoy a bit of time topping up the tan on the beach. Yes, RAF Akrotiri has its own beach!

Probably the highlight of the week was a visit to the Red Arrows who were training on the island prior to the air show season. After a briefing from the ground crew engineers and a tour around the flight line the cadets and staff were taken to a cliff top light house on the coast. From here they were able to get a brilliant front row seat for a practice Red Arrows display. The Arrows were so close you could smell the smoke! Check out the picture.

Anyone interested in a Cyprus camp should speak to their Squadron staff. The camps are held in April and October most years. Cadets must be 15 years or older and at least Leading cadet.
