Victory For Rugby Team

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wing junior rugby team had an excellent day by winning the 2011 inter-Wing tournament held at RAF Lyneham during February.

During the mini league phase of the tournament Hants IoW were drawn against the always dangerous Plymouth and Cornwall Wing and the unpredictable Dorset and Wiltshire Wing. Hants IoW came through both matches unscathed and without dropping any points beating Plymouth and Cornwall 19-0 and then Dorset Wilts by an impressive 29 points to 0.

These two wins took Hampshire and Isle of Wight into the final against the winners of the other mini league, Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing who themselves had claimed two scalps the first Devon and Somerset by 17 points to 5 and the second against Thames Valley where they completed a 29 point shut out.

The final was always going to be a tighter affair and it proved to be but Hants IoW showed there class and pulled out another victory winning the final 10-0.

Squadron Leader Knell, the Wing Sports Officer, was delighted and thanked all the cadets for the efforts as well as his coaching staff that included CIs Steve Wardle, Rob Whittle and Chris Crump.

Wing Commander Priest OC Hants IoW Wing was on hand to share in the celebrations and took part in the victory squeeze.
Cadet Andrew Whittle acted as the captain on the day and collected the trophy from Group Captain Remlinger, Regional Commandant, South West Region.
